Bio

A versatile defender, football runs in the family for Joel Asomugha - whose family has links to Albion.

His second-oldest brother, Stanley, was an academy product at the Baggies before being released at Under-19s, and he now plies his trade with Northern Premier League Division One West side, Sporting Khalsa.

So, it's no surprise to see his younger brother, Joel, following in his footsteps at The Hawthorns. Before the right-back - who can also play at centre-half - made the move to the Black Country, football started at home in Worcester.

Having grown up in Warndon, Worcestershire, Asomugha initially played football during his early years at Worcester Raiders up until U9s. He didn't have to travel far for his next development hub, playing for Worcester City between U10-11s.

Despite all those experiences, the Baggies had always been at the back of his mind after missing out on being signed at U7s. Clearly, though, those stints at Raiders and City benefitted Joel personally and professionally, with a promising stint in one of Albion's development centres led to him finally joining the club as an 11-year-old.

Progression through the ranks led to Joel penning a two-year scholarship in July 2025, and the 25/26 campaign brought a lot of football for the defender - both for the U18s and the U21s, where he made his earlier-than-anticipated debut at a higher level from the start against Exeter City in December 2025.

In Albion's youth system, more of those chances will present themselves as Asomugha hopes to seize his scholarship phase to ensure he can become a professional in the future.
