Albion Under-21s play their third Premier League International Cup group match against Borussia Mönchengladbach on Wednesday night (ko 7pm).

The young Baggies have experienced highs and lows on their debut appearance in the tournament, playing two very different games against Danish and Italian opposition.

But off the back of a positive performance in their previous Group B outing, and a recent five-game unbeaten run across all competitions, they will look to pit themselves against German counterparts this time around in the hope of pushing their case for the knockout stages.

Last time out

The Black Country academy hopefuls showed marked improvement as they swept Juventus’ youngsters aside in a 4-2 win at The Hawthorns.

Jack Bray netted a brace - his first goals for the club since joining in the summer - while an own goal and a stoppage-time strike from Rio Parmar wrapped up victory under the lights at Albion’s first-team stadium.

How things stand

The club's youth are currently joint-fourth in the International Cup Group B standings.

Leigh Downing’s men return to the Alexander Stadium for Wednesday’s European tie.

It will be their second match at the arena this term having played their opening PL Cup match there against Exeter City earlier in October - with all remaining home matches in that competition against Brentford and Luton Town to be played there over the proceeding months.

Pre-match thoughts

Souleyman Mandey is in good goalscoring form heading into Wednesday’s match at the Alex and he’s keen to make it another memorable night in the competition.

Having started the other two group games against FC Nordjælland and Juve', the Austrian knows better than most the challenges posed by European sides - and he’s expecting nothing different against Mönchengladbach this time around.

But the midfielder is full of confidence in his team-mates and his own ability having contributed two goals in winning performances against Braintree (NL Cup) and Reading (PL2) last week, and the 19-year-old is “motivated” to help Albion’s 21s claim another big scalp against the Germans.

“The lads are feeling great off the back of a win in the last match,” said Mandey.

“We only hope to continue the unbeaten run we’re on now when we play in the International Cup on Wednesday.

“When I scored against Braintree last week, it gave me the boost I needed to score more goals and that’s what I did against Reading on Friday.

“It only motivates me to keep scoring more, help the team perform and make my family proud.

“Scoring goals has been a target of mine this season, so to have got two last week was really pleasing and I’m focused on adding to my tally now.

“We don’t get to play European teams too often at this level, so these games - like the one on Wednesday - only fuel us to compete and show what we can do to the coaches and the fans.

“I always try and be the most aggressive player on the pitch to show opponents my strength because we’re competing with different players; younger lads, older boys, and I hope that being like that helps inspire my team-mates to show a similar level too.

“Being a good role model is important at this club because we have a lot of under-18s who play with us every week, and setting a good example to them helps us both in the long run.

“We will try our best to get a good result on Wednesday and a win would boost our confidence going back into the PL2, PL Cup and National League Cup matches we have.

“We already have a win in the International Cup against Juventus under our belts, and another win would put us in a strong position for the last group match against Valencia.

“So, we’re looking to try and make it interesting and a strong performance on Wednesday would do that.”
