PL2 Report | Albion 2-4 West Ham United

Albion players and West Ham players jump for the ball in a PL2 clash

Albion’s PL2 side suffered a 4-2 defeat at home to West Ham United on Monday.

The Baggies youngsters were 3-0 down heading into the final 15 minutes, but strikes from Layton Love and Akeel Higgins threatened a late fightback.

However, the Hammers hit a fourth in the closing stages to secure all three points on an afternoon where Martin Kelly returned to action for the first time in just under a year after suffering a serious knee injury, with the experienced defender coming on for the final half-an-hour.

The visitors made a blistering start at the West Bromwich Albion Training Ground, scoring after just three minutes. Kamarai Swyer fired home a loose ball inside the box after the Baggies were unable to clear the danger.

A host of opportunities then followed for both teams, with Jovan Malcolm, Higgins and Love going close for the Albion, while at the other end, Sean Moore and Regan Clayton couldn’t add to the Hammers’ advantage.

But their number 10, George Earthy, could. Baggies stopper Ben Cisse made a smart stop to deny Swyer a second, but from the resulting play, Earthy managed to squeeze the ball beyond the goalkeeper to make it 2-0 midway through the half.

The early part of the second period was quiet, with very few chances. The visitors had to wait until the 73rd minute to score a third and it came courtesy of Luizao, who slammed the ball into the far corner from inside the box.

Albion looked down and out, but two quickfire strikes made it very interesting. Love latched onto a loose ball to sweep into the bottom corner with 15 minutes remaining, and less than 120 seconds after that, Higgins converted from the left side of the box to reduce the Hammers’ lead to one.

With Richard Beale’s men pushing for what looked like an unlikely leveller at one stage, the Londoners managed to kill them game off by scoring a fourth. West Ham substitute Dan Rigge powered an effort past Cisse from a tight angle to send his side back to the capital with maximum points.

ALBION: Cisse, Williams, Hall, Harper-Bailey (Kelly 61), Shaw, Whitwell (Deeming HT), Mfuamba (Sule 79), Heard (Bostock HT), Malcolm (Richards HT), Higgins, Love.
