Krystian Bielik’s arrival in B71 not only adds a plethora of second-tier experience to the Albion squad, but also some vital leadership qualities.

The centre-back, who can also operate in the heart of midfield, skippered Birmingham City to the Sky Bet League One title last term, galvanising a squad who’d suffered relegation the previous season to help them bounce back to the Championship at the first time of asking.

And having played most of his career football in England’s most unpredictable division - one which he's made 129 outings in - the 27-year-old will be confident he can hit the ground running in navy-blue-and-white.

Having grown up in a football-enthused country such as Poland, it was almost inevitable that Bielik would hold such a strong determination to become a professional.

This journey began at his local team for the Konin-born hopeful. Górnik Konin provided Krystian with his route into football, giving him the platform to develop his skills and show his capability - something he succeeded in doing.

One of Poland’s biggest teams, Lech Poznań, recruited the youngster at the age of 14, allowing the defender to enjoy success at youth level - winning their U17 Championship in 2014.

Bielik’s progress didn’t go unnoticed by fellow serial title-winners, Legia Warsaw, who recruited the youngster and gave him an unforgettable experience - his senior debut at 16 years old, playing the full 90 minutes in a 2-0 win over Korona Kielce.

Krystian made his European bow for Legia too, featuring in the UEFA Europa League against Trabzonspor towards the end of 2014, and his impactful spell in the Polish outfit’s senior ranks prompted Premier League side Arsenal to take interest.

After half a season in his nation’s capital, Bielik was on the move again - this time to England’s main city with the Gunners where he played predominantly in their U18 and U23 sides, making two senior appearances which both came in the League Cup between 2015-2016.

It was clear a loan move would be the catalyst to Krystian’s senior career, with Birmingham City, Walsall and Charlton handing the defence-minded Poland youth international (who he'd played for at U16, 17, 18, 19 and 21 level) those opportunities to embrace first-team football again.

But the Valley was where Bielik made the most impact during the 2018/19 campaign, appearing 34 times, scoring four goals, and providing two assists during a term which saw the Addicks achieve play-off final success against Sunderland.

Bielik earned the Player of the Match award in a 2-1 win over the Black Cats, helping the Londoners book their return to the Championship in the process.

This progressive spell elevated the defender’s profile not just at club level - where he made a permanent move to Derby County from Arsenal the following campaign - but also in the Polish national team, who rewarded his promotion-winning campaign with a maiden call-up to the senior side.

He made his debut against Slovenia in September 2019 and currently has 11 caps to-date.

A total of 49 appearances were made by the Pole over two seasons at Pride Park, and following relegation to the third tier, Krystian departed the Rams to continue playing in the Championship - agreeing a second loan move to Blues in 2022.

During this campaign, Bielik made 35 league appearances - chipping in with an assist and scoring once in a 2-0 win over, his latest team, the Albion.

That season compelled the Birmingham hierarchy to make him a permanent part of the squad, signing a three-year contract in 2023 before going on to play 78 times across all competitions and help Blues return to England’s second tier last term following relegation in 2024.

Now, after moving across the West Midlands to The Hawthorns, Krystian can start a new Championship chapter with Ryan Mason’s Baggies team.
