Albion Women Interim Head Coach Charlie Fripp says his side were “exceptional” as they scored in the 95th minute to beat Liverpool Feds on Sunday afternoon.
The Baggies went ahead through Zoe Creaney and Rhianne Oakley, but were pegged back twice at Walton Hall Park, setting the stage for Abbey Jones to smash home the winner in added time.
Fripp says the 3-2 result shows his team’s “resilience” was key to their FAWNL Northern Premier victory.
He said: “What a game. Huge credit must go to Liverpool Feds because they had a game plan and we tried to match it, and I thought the girls were exceptional.
“They did everything we asked; they bought into the plan and got behind it as a team. Everyone in the group played their part; it’s a difficult place to come to. Not many teams will come here and get much at all - so to come here and get three points is amazing.
“The players are so resilient, the girls bounce back from everything and get their heads in the game at all times. The goal in every game is to get the win, and the players share that mindset.
“The late goal was incredible, we had Kate Evans do the same last term in the dying seconds, and Abbey Jones has done exceptionally well to score the winner today. The scenes were unbelievable; it shows the passion of the group and that everyone tries to buy into what we’re doing here.
“It’s amazing to be such a good team, and it’s a class result to take forward into our next game. This group have incredible resilience, and they show me that week in, week out.”
Substitute Jones couldn’t have wished for a better way to open her scoring account at the Baggies, as she came off the bench to notch the winner on Merseyside - a result she insists was “deserved.”
She said: “I’m so happy. The girls played so well today, and I’m so happy to get the late winner.
“I was just thinking ‘Ella’s worked so hard today’, so when she put the ball into me, I had to make the most of it. I just had to try and smash it.
“We were all just so happy because they all put in a great shift today. We deserved the win, and we’re delighted to have got it.
“We played well in the first half, and we could’ve gone in more than a goal ahead. Feds were much better in the second half, so fair play to them, but I’m glad to have got the goal.
“Of course you want to be playing games every week, but when you come off the bench and score the winner - you don’t mind at all.”
