Carlos Corberán: We’re heading into 2023 with a deserved win

Carlos Corberán is interviewed after Albion's win over Preston

Carlos Corberán says Albion fully deserved their three points against Preston on Thursday night and believes the victory is the perfect way to close the calendar year.

The Baggies won 2-0 against the Lilywhites in what was the club’s final game of 2022, with Okay Yokuslu, who delivered an outstanding display, finding the back of the net in each half.

The triumph is Albion’s fourth successive one at home and seventh in the last eight Sky Bet Championship matches, and the boss was delighted with the performance his players were able to produce on a thrilling night under the lights.

Albion impressed once again on Thursday night

Carlos said: “I’m really happy that we’ve collected another win and another three points.

“The team competed really well and we created so many chances, meaning that their best player was their goalkeeper.

“Our goalkeeper Alex Palmer didn’t have too much work to do which meant we were performing well in defence.

“We were really serious and we pressed really well in the second half and one of the consequences of our pressing was our second goal.

“We created enough chances today and stopped enough chances against us to more than deserve the win and that’s the most important thing for me.

“It was very difficult to beat their goalkeeper and it took many chances to finally do it. It can be frustrating for teams in these kinds of moments, but they were managing it very well.

“The finish from Okay for the first goal was unbelievable. He’s been so impressive over the last few weeks and has shown a brilliant level of commitment and personality.

“It’s important to keep doing the things that help us score goals in games and not stop doing them. The second goal is an example of that.

“The second half there is always a risk of becoming too deep and not aggressive enough.

“We wanted to avoid this and my staff and I were insisting that we didn’t stop pressing.

“We finished the year with a win and a win that we deserved. We did it here in front of our fans who were supporting the team. The stadium was full tonight.

“Performing how we performed tonight is the best way to thank our fans for their support.”
