An athletic, tough-tackling midfielder with experience across Western Europe? Albion have seen success with that profile before.
Known for his ability to break up play, quick feet, knack for holding on to the ball and proficiency in starting attacks, Rabby Nzingoula provides a vital set of attributes to James Morrison’s squad.
Joining from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg for an undisclosed fee, the 20-year-old enjoyed a loan spell at 2. Bundesliga outfit FC Nürnberg earlier this year. He featured 15 times as Miroslav Klose’s side achieved their joint-highest finish since relegation from the Bundesliga in 2019 – 8th.
Nzingoula contributed heavily to Nürnberg’s solidity in the second half of the season, winning a tackle every seven minutes of football he played on average.
Combined with the fact the France Under-20 international was only dribbled past on seven occasions during his time in Germany and his average of 5.34 recoveries per 90 minutes, it’s clear Rabby is a force to be reckoned with in the centre of the park.
And what does he do once he’s won the ball? Create. In his 590 minutes of 2. Bundesliga football this year, Nzingoula contributed one goal and two assists, but those numbers certainly could’ve been higher.
He averaged 1.83 chances created per 90 minutes, putting him in the top 7% in the division for that metric. Furthermore, his expected goals were up at almost one every two games, putting him in the division’s top 2% for expected goals by central midfielders per 90 minutes. Evidently, he can also contribute further up the field, and with time, will only become more prolific.
He racked up his highest number of appearances in a single season to date while on loan at Montpellier in 2024/25. Featuring 27 times and scoring once in Ligue 1, the 18-year-old Rabby shone despite the club having a difficult year.
Once again, it was his ability to break up play and be strong on the ball that earned him plaudits. Throughout the season, he won 155 duels and completed 67 successful tackles, as well as making 29 interceptions and 22 clearances – all of which put him in the top 20% or higher for midfielders in France’s top division by those individual metrics.
While Rabby Nzingoula is six years Ousmane Diakité’s junior, it’s clear he brings many of the attributes that have made the Malian midfielder so popular in B71. The newest recruit will be hoping he can emulate that success and play an integral part during his time at The Hawthorns.
