Albion 1-0 Wigan

Albion continued their remarkable home form with a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Daryl Dike’s first-half goal was enough to earn an important three Sky Bet Championship points – ensuring the Baggies are now 10 unbeaten in all competitions at The Hawthorns.

The result moves Carlos Corberán’s side up to ninth in the league table ahead of this weekend’s Huddersfield fixture.

The boss named an unchanged team for the visit of Wigan, bringing Mo Faal on to the bench after the striker was recalled from his goal-laden loan at AFC Fylde.

Following a quiet start, it was Albion who opened the scoring on 27 minutes. Jayson Molumby - set-up by Dike - saw his initial shot pushed against the crossbar, but thankfully the American striker was on hand to nod the rebound home.

And for the rest of the first period the home side were in the ascendancy, notable chances including Dike having a powerful volley well-saved and Dara O’Shea heading narrowly over.

As the break approached Wigan’s Will Keane fired wide with their only real shot up until that point, and Albion went into half-time deservedly leading 1-0.

Albion carried on their dominance at the start of the second 45, though Conor Townsend couldn’t beat Amos from range.

The Latics then tried to get back in it as the half progressed, substitute Josh Magennis heading over and Josh Griffiths denying Omar Rekik’s low strike.

But they were kept at bay in B71, thanks in part to another top Griffiths stop. John Swift even smashed one onto the crossbar late on as the crucial victory was, eventually, secured.

Albion: Griffiths; Furlong, O’Shea, Pieters (Ajayi 71), Townsend; Yokuslu, Molumby (Chalobah 57); Wallace, Swift (Gardner-Hickman 85), Albrighton (Reach 71); Dike.

Subs: Button, Malcolm, Faal.

Attendance: 21,552.
