Villa PL2 v Albion PL2 match report

Albion’s PL2 side recorded a 1-0 victory against local rivals Aston Villa at Bodymoor Heath training ground on Monday night.

A brilliant Nick Clayton-Phillips strike within the opening quarter of an hour proved to be the difference in a lively derby, in which Albion stopper Josh Griffiths saved a first-half penalty.

The Baggies took the lead when a George Harmon cross was deflected into the path of Clayton-Phillips by Jamie Soule, leaving the winger to rifle home into the roof of the net from inside the box.

Albion had chances to extend their lead; Finn Azaz had a shot blocked at the last moment by Villa 'keeper Viljami Sinisalo, Soule curled an effort off the post from the edge of the box while Rayhaan Tulloch hit the side-netting with a strike.

With the visitors failing to add to their advantage, the Villains looked to get back on level terms.

Keinan Davis struck the crossbar from close range, and then they had a chance to equalise from the spot after Saul Shotton was judged to have brought down Michael Tait.

However, Josh Griffiths made a diving save to his left to stop Tyreik Wright from the spot and keep Albion’s advantage intact.

Tulloch had the Baggies’ best chance of the second half and while the hosts created multiple opportunities, Albion battled hard to keep Villa at bay and complete a hard-fought victory on the road.

ALBION: Griffiths; Fitzwater, Shotton, Williams, Harmon; Harper, Brunt; Clayton-Phillips (Gilbert 63), Azaz (Dyce 83), Tulloch; Soule (Faal 89).

Substitutes: Boruc, Sharpe.
