Johnstone: Clean sheets give us a solid base

Sam Johnstone believes clean sheets provide the Baggies with the perfect base to build from in the hunt for Sky Bet Championship victories.

Albion’s 1-0 triumph at Preston North End was their fifth successive win and fifth clean sheet in their last six away games.

Johnstone, who has played every minute of league action since signing for the Club in July 2018, has earned plenty of praise this season having produced several impressive displays and a host of stunning saves.

And Albion’s No.1 says shutting out the opposition gives his side a huge advantage.

"I was really pleased to keep another clean sheet on Monday night," admitted Sam.

“I said a few weeks ago that if you keep a clean sheet it gives you a base to go on and win the game and that’s what happened on Monday night.

“We kept a clean sheet and scored the winner in the 90th minute.

“If you keep a clean sheet if gives you that base to build from and ensures you’re picking up at least a point. You’re then asking your attacking players to go and win you the game and we’ve got plenty of lads who can do that.

“I want us to start doing it more at home.

“The lads worked hard and it really is a team effort. They ran their socks off and put their bodies on the line to make sure we kept a clean sheet.

“I’ve made some saves but the defenders have made blocks and tackles too.

“It was a really important win for us.”
