Matty Phillips struggled to hide the delight from his face after netting the winner at Nottingham Forest, however, he did admit he may have been a little “lucky” in the process.
Albion’s number 10 found the top corner from 35 yards with an effort that appeared to have been intended as a cross.
That strike handed the Baggies an impressive opening day victory over the Reds at the City Ground and gave Slaven Bilić the perfect start to his managerial reign at the Club.
And Phillips believes taking three points from the first game can be a big boost for the rest of the 2019/20 campaign.
He said: “I’d love to be able to say that I meant it, but I was just looking to bend one in.
“Luckily for me it has gone the right side and gone over the goalkeeper so I’m delighted.
“This ground has been good to me. I got the winner here today and the equaliser here last season.
“It’s a big three points to take on the opening day. We have got a lot of work to do but there were certainly plenty of positives to take.
“I thought we were a bit slow in the opening 15 minutes but once they scored we showed a good reaction and got ourselves back in it.
“Our aim is promotion so it’s good to get off to a good start.”
