On this day in 1968...

A tempestuous night in Belgium saw the Throstles beaten 3-1 by RFC Bruges in the first leg of their European Cup Winners’ Cup tie, a game that entered folklore as the “Battle of Bruges”.

Asa Hartford scored for the Albion but the evening was marred by riots off the field and attacks on the players as they tried to leave the pitch.

Bruges were also a pretty physical outfit and Jeff Astle in particular received some special treatment from their defenders.

Albion turned the tie around on home soil though, Hartford and Tony Brown scoring in the 2-0 win as the Baggies progressed on the away goals rule.
