On this day in 1961...

Speculation over the future of the playing side of the club ended with the appointment of Archie Macaulay as the new Albion boss in succession to Gordon Clark.

Macaulay had been a Scottish international during a playing career interrupted by war, playing for clubs such as Rangers and Arsenal. 

He joined Albion after leaving his post as manager at Norwich City where he had some success, notably as FA Cup giantkillers.
