Baggies continue FA Cup journey

Albion moved into the SSE FA Women’s Cup First Round Proper following a 2-1 victory away to Leafield Athletic Ladies.

The game began at a frantic pace with Holly Nelson bravely saving at the feet of Sofi Liparis before Imogen Sinclair was on hand to clear a Georgia Harris free-kick off the line as the Baggies were put under early pressure.

Yet in the fifth minute a floating corner from Laura Davies was met by a bullet header at the near post by Natalie Murray to put Albion ahead.

Just two minutes later Leafield were back on level terms when Sam Berry’s curling set-piece took a slight deflection before looping over Nelson.

Harris sent a dipping effort wide for the hosts, while at the other end another Davies corner caused panic in the Leafield defence before eventually being cleared to safety as both sides failed to find a second goal before the break.

It didn’t take long after the interval for Albion to restore their advantage when Davies curled a 25-yard free-kick into the far corner via a deflection off a Leafield defender.

Louis Sowe’s side could have made the game safe in the final stages but substitute Ria Henry’s close-range header hit the back of Leafield goalkeeper Kirsty Grigg before being scrambled clear - with Albion securing their seventh win from eight games.

The Baggies are in cup action again next weekend when they host Nettleham Ladies in the Second Round of the FA Women’s National League Plate on Sunday, October 14 (ko 2pm).
