Phillips thriving in new central role

MATT Phillips is enjoying life in his new central position and expressed his delight at scooping the club's Coral Player of the Month for November.

Phillips topped Albion's Twitter poll with almost 50 per cent of the votes following a month of impressive performances which saw him also claim one goal and three assists, with that sparkling form continuing firmly into December.

The versatile and energetic Scotland international has adopted a more middle of the park role of late than his more familiar wing position and it is something in which he is clearly thriving.

And Baggies supporters will be hoping Phillips' fine form continues at Sheffield United on Friday night, where Albion will be looking to extend their five-match unbeaten run.

Phillips said: "I've obviously been playing a new role and, along with everyone else, we're enjoying our football, we're enjoying coming into training and I think recent performances show that.

"I'm really enjoying it (more central role), it keeps me involved in the game, sometimes when I'm out wide the game can sort of pass me by at times.

"So I'm enjoying it, it's a new position and I'm still learning it, offensively and defensively, but I'm enjoying being in the thick of it."

For the 27-year-old, the awareness of receiving the ball in different areas, often congested, is the main difference between the two roles.

Phillips has occupied more different positions than any other Albion player this season, four, and boasts the most amount of chances created, 36.

Asked whether there's more responsibility in his new role, Phillips replied: "Yeah, as I say, you're constantly involved, offensively and defensively, so there's not a minute of the game that goes by when you're not.

"It's an important position and one I'm enjoying."
