Jay star of 'professional' performance

DARREN Moore saluted his players for "earning" victory against Wigan Athletic - and there was special mention for the match-winner.

Jay Rodriguez struck a sublime double in Boxing Day triumph over the Latics to take Albion's unbeaten run to eight Sky Bet Championship games (W6, D2).

And it was just rewards for his work ethic, said Darren.

"It was a difficult game - we had to go and earn the win," he nodded.

"Wigan set their stall out and made it very difficult for us.

"We were patient when we needed to be and managed the arena.

"It was a professional performance from the players and two great finishes from Jay.

"He's deserved the two goals - the first a fantastic header with power and precision - because he's worked incredibly hard in the 90 minutes."

For the second goal, the gaffer added, "you're looking for composure and technique. It's a precise finish and he executed it wonderfully."

The only downside for the Baggies was injury to Dwight Gayle; our top scorer leaving the field with a hamstring complaint in the aftermath of Jay's opener.

Darren said: "At the moment we're not sure what the severity is with Dwight.

"I'd be speculating until the medical team see him over the next 24 hours."
