Newcastle 0 Albion 1 match highlights

MATT Phillips fired Albion to a 1-0 victory at Newcastle United and extended Darren Moore's unbeaten run to four matches.

Phillips smashed home the only goal of the game in the 29th minute, his third of the season, to seal all three Premier League points.

Ben Foster made a superb reaction save to tip Dwight Gayle's point-blank header on to the crossbar while Kenedy also struck a post for the Magpies but the Baggies stood firm to record their first success at St James' Park since 2011.

The Tyneside triumph comes on the back of the club's win at Manchester United and draws against Liverpool and Swansea City under Moore, who took charge of first-team affairs at the start of April.

It means Albion are now five points behind fourth-bottom Swansea, who host Chelsea on Saturday evening, with two matches remaining.

Mooro kept faith with the same starting XI for a fourth fixture in succession.

James McClean flashed an early effort across the face of goal before Gayle forced Foster into a low save at the other end.

Both sides continued to probe and it was Albion who broke the deadlock just before the half-hour mark.

Jake Livermore sent the ball through to Phillips, in space on the right side of the penalty area, and he took a touch before drilling home past Martin Dubravka.

The Magpies came close to a quick response when Kenedy beat the offside trap but saw his deft finish clip the outside of a post.

And Albion were indebted to Foster for a superb save on the stroke of half-time to maintain their advantage.

Mohamed Diame saw his effort deflect off target for a corner, from which Foster showed incredible reflexes to somehow palm Gayle's header on to the crossbar.

The Baggies, donning their change green shirt, got into promising positions through Jay Rodriguez and Salomon Rondon after the restart but could not test Dubravka.

The hosts pushed for a second-half leveller, applying plenty of pressure in the closing stages, but Albion were not seriously troubled and remained strong to record victory and claim the spoils.

ALBION: Foster, Nyom, Dawson, Hegazi, Gibbs, Phillips, Brunt (c), Livermore, McClean (Evans 90), Rodriguez (Krychowiak 77), Rondon (Robson-Kanu 94).

Subs: Myhill, Yacob, Burke, Sturridge.
