Albion 1 Burnley 2 match highlights

ALL the action as Albion fell to a 2-1 Premier League defeat against Burnley at The Hawthorns.

In-form Clarets striker Ashley Barnes opened the scoring with an acrobatic finish midway through the first half, making it four goals in as many games.

Former Baggies striker Chris Wood then doubled the advantage for seventh-placed Burnley, heading home on the rebound from close range in the 73rd minute.

Salomon Rondon gave Albion hope with a fine left-footed finish, his ninth goal of the season in all competitions, but it was not enough to secure a share of the spoils.

Head Coach Alan Pardew named an unchanged starting XI from the side who fell to a late defeat at AFC Bournemouth before the international break, although there was a place on the bench for Egypt international Ali Gabr.

Rondon's header forced an early save from Nick Pope while Clarets captain Ben Mee stung the palms of Ben Foster at the other end.

It was the visitors who took the lead in the 22nd minute, Barnes hooking his right foot around Aaron Lennon's cross to convert from 10 yards.

Wood pulled a chance wide for Burnley when in space before Rondon's glancing header was superbly kept out by Pope low down to his left, preserving the away side's lead at the break.

Matt Phillips, who scored the winner in Scotland's win over Hungary in midweek, was introduced at half-time in place of Kieran Gibbs.

Albion pushed in a bid to force a leveller but could not create a clear-cut opening and it was Burnley who doubled their advantage.

Wood received the ball inside the Baggies box, turned inside and saw his strike well kept out by Foster's reflex save but the New Zealand international was on hand to head home the rebound from close range.

Rondon reduced the arrears in the 83rd minute with a smart strike from 12 yards but, despite Albion pressing for a late second, it was the visitors who travelled back to Lancashire with all three points.

ALBION: Foster, Nyom, Dawson, Evans (c), Hegazi, Gibbs (Phillips 46), Livermore, Yacob, Brunt, Rodriguez (Burke 74), Rondon.

Subs: Myhill, McAuley, Gabr, Krychowiak, McClean.
