Burke to face Coventry

OLIVER Burke will be part of the Albion squad that travels to the Ricoh Arena to take on Coventry tonight (ko 7.45pm).

It’s the Baggies’ third and final Checkatrade Trophy game, and they currently sit at the foot of the Northern Group E table after losses to Walsall and Shrewsbury.

“The thing that Oli gives us is an attacking presence, which is probably something we’ve lacked in our games so far this season,” said under-23s boss James Shan.

“In the games that he’s played for us he has shown a directness and a willingness. He’s got the ability to go past people so hopefully he’ll get us up the pitch.”

Even though his side can’t qualify for the next round, Shan still wants to see his players put in a performance after they conceded a late goal to lose to Sheffield United in the Premier League Cup last week.

“Looking at the age of our squad and some of them being in the U23s a bit earlier than they should be, I’ll probably excuse them for some things,” he added.

“But the manner and the time in which we conceded that goal on Thursday evening was bitterly disappointing.

“There has been a few stern words said in the changing room and in the analysis sessions, so it’s definitely a game where I need to see a response from some of the boys.

“On paper Shrewsbury was a difficult game because of their league position and form, but this one might be even harder.

“Coventry need to beat us to qualify so there’s a lot on the game from their point of view, especially as they are the holders.

“We’re going to have to show a lot of fight and resilience to compete in the match.”
