Albion 2 Newcastle United 2

ALBION were pegged back from 2-0 up to draw 2-2 with Newcastle United on Tuesday evening in a game which saw Sam Field register his first goal for the club.

The Academy graduate, 19, wheeled away in delight and was mobbed by team-mates in front of the Birmingham Road End after volleying home Matt Phillips' far-post cross.

Field's 56th-minute strike followed a header from the recalled Hal Robson-Kanu, who converted a swift move on the stroke of half-time.

But Ciaran Clark nodded the visitors back into the encounter just three minutes later, with Jonny Evans diverting the ball into his own net seven minutes from time after a Matt Ritchie free-kick.

Both sides probed in search of a breakthrough inside the opening quarter, Salomon Rondon going closest after 20 minutes when his ambitous dipping long-range strike clipped the angle.

Robson-Kanu almost got the better of Magpies keeper Karl Darlow with a deflected header before poking just wide as it looked to be goalless heading into the break.

Yet it was third time lucky for the Wales frontman in the first minute of injury time as he headed home after Kieran Gibbs had expertly taken Jonny Evans' sweeping cross-field pass into his path and delivered an inch-perfect pass.

Ben Foster got down well to keep out Mikel Merino's fierce volley shortly after the restart and the save proved crucial as the Baggies doubled their lead minutes later.

Phillips swung a teasing cross to the back post and Field was on hand to volley home a well-taken finish to the delight of the majority of the 25,534 present.

Clark reduced the arrears for Newcastle just three minutes later, rising highest to head in a corner.

Robson-Kanu shot straight at Darlow when well placed before Foster produced a stunning save to keep out an offside Matt Ritchie at the other end.

But after James McClean had brought down DeAndre Yedlin on the right-hand side, Ritchie fizzed a ball across the box and was rewarded with an unfortunate own goal from skipper Evans to give the Magpies a share of the spoils.

ALBION: Foster, Nyom, Hegazi, Evans (c), Gibbs (McClean 80), Phillips, Livermore, Barry (Yacob 64), Field (Krychowiak 84), Rondon, Robson-Kanu.

Subs: Myhill, McAuley, Burke, Rodriguez.
