Cup glory for youngsters

Under-14s lift Premier League Cup

ALBION have won the Premier League U14 Albert Phelan North Cup with a series of performances which have delighted the Club’s Academy staff.

The Baggies youngsters toppled Liverpool 3-2 in the final at Kirkby having already claimed the scalp of Manchester City in the semi-final 2-1.

This follows the Under 13s triumph at the Truce finals in Belgium as well as an unbeaten, third-place finish in their age group’s Premier League international tournament.

The 14s reached the final stages of their PL Cup having emerged unbeaten from group action before beating Middlesbrough in the last eight.

But it has been the two performances against City and Liverpool which have truly impressed Academy manager Mark Harrison.

“I felt I had watched one of the most outstanding performances by any Academy team in my time as manager when the boys defeated Manchester City 2-1,” said Harrison.

“The performance against Liverpool was also very impressive. We had to be gritty and determined in the first half but as the second half wore on, we took more control and dominated long spells.

“We created a number of opportunities and could have made the game more comfortable at 3-1 but Liverpool scored with eight minutes remaining and that made it a nervy finish.

“We do not like to over-promote our young players when they do well in the same way we do not go overboard when they have a bad result.

“But the boys should be rightly proud of their efforts.”

Albion’s Under-14s must now prepare for a showdown with Arsenal in the national final of the tournament.
