Albion exit Premier League Cup

Youngsters beaten 1-0 by Liverpool

Albion's under-23 side were knocked out of the Premier League Cup on Tuesday evening after they were beaten 1-0 by Liverpool at Aggborough despite a spirited performance.

The Baggies needed three points to qualify for the knockout stages but fell to defeat after a cruel, deflected strike in added time.

Liverpool saw most of the ball in the early stages, with Kyle Howkins doing well to usher Sheyi Ojo out of play when it looked like the Reds winger was clear on goal.

That incident typified the first period, with the hosts defending resolutely and Liverpool struggling to break them down.

But Andre Wright came within inches of giving Albion the lead in the 31st minute, missing Kane Wilson's driven cross at the back post.

Albion came flying out of the blocks in the second half and Sam Field went close, lashing a half-volley wide of the upright.

Boaz Myhill was called into action five minutes later, tipping Yan Dhanda's effort onto the post before gathering the loose ball.

Kyle Edwards went close with a free kick in the 55th minute before Matty Virtue struck wide of Myhill at the other end.

With Albion pressing for a winner, Jack Fitzwater went close after his flick was deflected towards goal. It took a fine stop from Caoimhin Kelleher to keep the scores level.

And with one minute of added time remaining Connor Randall's shot deflected past Myhill meaning the Baggies exit the competition.
