Morrison and Phillips on target as Albion down champions

  • Morrison heads opener (52)
  • Slimani levels for Foxes (55)
  • Phillips fires winner (72)
  • Attendance: 31,879
  • Albion Star Man: Matt Phillips
ALBION secured a 2-1 victory at Premier League champions Leicester City courtesy of Matt Phillips' maiden goal for the Club.

The recalled winger was a livewire all afternoon at the King Power Stadium and got his reward in the 72nd minute as he latched on to Danny Drinkwater's short backpass and found the net with a delightful finish.

James Morrison had earlier headed the Baggies in front - his first goal and first league start since January - before Islam Slimani levelled for the Foxes with a header of his own just three minutes later.

It was enough to secure Albion's third league victory of the season and their sixth in the last eight visits to Leicester, where they are now unbeaten since 1994.

The Baggies also inflicted City's first home league defeat since September 2015.

The visitors enjoyed the better of a largely low-key opening 45 minutes, Phillips going closest when his early low shot was tipped around a post by Foxes goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler.

Chris Brunt came within inches of latching on to Morrison's throughball while, at the other end, Gareth McAuley made a vital interception to clear the danger with Slimani lurking.

The Baggies took a deserved lead in the 52nd minute as Morrison latched on to Phillips' right-wing cross to direct a deft header into the far corner.

Yet the advantage lasted just three minutes as an unmarked Slimani nodded the hosts level from Riyad Mahrez's ball into the six-yard box.

Phillips cleared off the line from Robert Huth as the second-half action continued, before Zieler turned Dawson's header behind.

And the drama was complete when Phillips grabbed what turned out to be the winner 18 minutes from time, pouncing on Drinkwater's short backpass to find the net and secure all three points.
