Fletcher: Matt is a 'terrific signing'

Captain hails quality and character of new man

CAPTAIN Darren Fletcher believes Matt Phillips' signing represents a "fantastic" start to the club's summer transfer business.

"Fletch" and Phillips have shared time on Scotland duty but the Baggies skipper cited the impression the wide-man left in Premier League football as a major reason for The Hawthorns to roll out the "welcome Matt."

"He's definitely a terrific signing for us," said Darren.

"I think he's a fantastic player and a great addition to the squad - a really good guy too who is going to gel within the dressing room.

"He gets his head down and gets on with things and that's the kind of character the lads will enjoy having around."

Phillips' last interaction with Albion came on a painful day for the Baggies, a 4-1 home defeat in the 2014-15 campaign which could not prevent QPR's relegation but highlighted the newcomer's qualities.

Fletcher added: "I thought Matty was QPR's best player the season they got relegated.

"When they beat us at The Hawthorns, he was their best player on the day. He did everything that day - he was strong, winning headers, battling for the cause but also showing real bits of quality that we know he has, creating goals and causing us problems.

"He's a great first additioin and we will be aiming for a few more so we can say that we have had a good summer."
