Fletcher hails Albion’s ‘brilliant’ supporters

Captain has his say on Baggies fans

BAGGIES skipper Darren Fletcher has described the support from Albion fans in recent weeks as “brilliant”.

The Hawthorns was boinging with delight when Jonny Evans slotted home a last-gasp winner against Stoke on Saturday, as Albion recorded their first double over the Potters since 1976/77.

Previously, the Baggies had just two wins from nine home matches, but back-to-back victories over Newcastle United and Stoke City have seen them move nine points clear of the Premier League danger zone.

Scotland international Fletcher said the players were delighted to be able to reward the fans for their terrific backing, and hopes the impressive recent home form can continue over the coming months.

He said: “When it is tight in games late on as it was against Stoke, you need the help of your supporters and they were brilliant.

“It’s nice to be rewarding them with a couple of home wins after a tough spell at The Hawthorns in the first half of the season.

“Hopefully we can carry that on over the next few months.

“They have stuck with us through those difficult times when they had every right to be frustrated, but they’ve been very supportive and have stuck with the players and the team as a whole.

“That’s very important and doesn’t happen at a lot of grounds.

“We are very lucky in that respect and we’re grateful for it.

“They have been patient, they haven’t made it a difficult place for us to play which does happen elsewhere and can hamper performances.

“Instead, the fans have really stuck by us and the players have responded.”
