PEPE Mel is hoping for a right-back boost with Steven Reid set to train today ahead of tomorrow’s trip to Sunderland (ko 7.45pm).
The 33-year-old defender missed Sunday’s clash at Arsenal due to the groin problem he picked up in the 1-0 win over West Ham.
Craig Dawson had to fill in at right-back against the Gunners with Billy Jones (hamstring) rested as a precaution.
And Jones will be assessed again before the Stadium of Light encounter, with Mel insisting he will not be risked if he is not fit enough.
Liam Ridgewell (knee) and Zoltan Gera (hamstring) remain sidelined.
