Defender delighted for everyone at club
GARETH McAuley says he and the rest of Albion’s players were delighted to claim the local bragging rights with a ‘massive’ win over Villa on Saturday.
The Northern Ireland international played the full 90 minutes in the 1-0 win - The Baggies’ first victory at The Hawthorns against their neighbours since 2011.
McAuley produced another solid display alongside Joleon Lescott, as the pair helped Albion to a second consecutive clean sheet.
And the 35-year-old was delighted for everyone involved with the club, as Alan Irvine’s side claimed a crucial three points.
“There is no hiding, it was a massive win for us,” said McAuley.
“It was big for everyone, it is such an important game and we were desperate to win it.
“It’s a big relief but also a result which the supporters will love, getting one over their local rivals and it is no different for the players.
“The pressure was on with Villa going down to ten men, but it isn’t easy playing against ten men.
“Thankfully Gards popped up with a priceless goal for us.
“We said last week that we wanted to stop the bad run that we were on and we have done that, now we have got to kick on.”
