Berahino targets double figures

Academy graduate topped Albion's scoring charts last term

SAIDO Berahino has set himself the personal target of going at least one better than last season.

The forward, an Academy graduate at The Hawthorns, marked his breakthrough season last term by finding the net nine times in 35 appearances in all competitions.

It proved enough to claim the club’s Top Goalscorer and Young Player of the Season awards.

But Berahino has set his own sights even higher for the 2014/15 campaign, while also being keen to stress his obvious desire to work for the greater benefit of the team.

“Of course I have my own ambitions,” he said.

“Obviously I want to do well, I want to score as many goals as I can for this club, West Bromwich Albion.

“I started as a youngster here and really want to kick on from last season, push myself and see if I can get double figures.

“But ultimately I’m here as a team player, I just want to play and enjoy my football.

“I want to make sure we have a great start and stay in the Premier League, that we’re up there pushing to finish high.”

Berahino’s exploits last season certainly put him in the spotlight on the international scene.

The 21-year-old first represented England at Under-16 level in early 2009.

He went on to play for every age group up to the Under-20s, scoring a total of 14 goals along the way, before earning his first Under-21 cap last September.

Berahino has since played nine times for the Young Lions, finding the net on an impressive six occasions.

And the Albion frontman hopes that an even better 2014/15 Barclays Premier League campaign could potentially put him on an even greater radar.

“I would like to play for England. This season I’m just going to try and push myself as much as I can,” he said.

“Ultimately my main goal is to ensure I have at least double figures this season for West Bromwich Albion.

“And I’m sure if I can do that then I’ll be knocking on the door for the seniors.

“So hopefully I play well, push myself and make sure this season that I really give it a good go.”
