Baggies boss gives his verdict on deadline-day deals
STEVE Clarke is delighted to have strengthened his attacking options after the club sealed deadline-day deals for Stephane Sessegnon and Victor Anichebe. The Baggies broke their transfer record to sign attacking midfielder Sessegnon from Sunderland.
Powerhouse striker Anichebe arrived shortly after for an undisclosed fee from Everton during a busy end to the summer transfer window.
With versatile midfielder Morgan Amalfitano signing earlier in the day on a season-long loan deal from Marseille, and Nicolas Anelka, Matej Vydra and Scott Sinclair also joining in recent weeks, Clarke believes his new-look squad packs plenty of goal threat.
“We needed to strengthen in the forward areas and we’re very hopeful that Stephane and Victor will fit the bill,” said the head coach.
“Stephane is quick and direct and can be a match-winner. He has the individual skills that can turn a game.
“He creates chances for others as well as scoring his fair share of goals.
“Along with Morgan, I’m hoping Stephane will add more creativity to the team.”
On Anichebe, Clarke added: “Victor is a different kind of striker to what we already have here.
“He is a big, strong, powerful targetman. He is the type of forward we identified that we needed to help us this season.”
Albion also brought in centre-half Diego Lugano and keeper Lee Camp, as well as re-signing Goran Popov from Dynamo Kiev on a season-long loan, during the summer transfer window.
