Mulumbu told to do it his way

Clarke not worried by midfielder's mounting yellow cards

STEVE Clarke has urged Youssouf Mulumbu to continue playing his combative game despite walking a disciplinary tightrope.

The Baggies midfielder has raced to three bookings in his opening seven games of the season.

He is now just two away from picking up a one-match ban, with the first yellow-card amnesty of the season not until the turn of the year.

“I don’t count yellow cards,” said Clarke.

“I look at yellow cards that are stupid and tell the players not to get stupid yellow cards.

“But if they get yellow cards during the course of a game it is part and parcel of football.

“In modern football certain players are going to pick up loads of yellow cards.

“There is a player at Liverpool who I love who is already suspended because he’s got five yellows.

“You can’t take that competitive nature or the tendency to pick up yellow cards away from these players because that’s part of their game.

“As long as they don’t pick up double yellow cards that puts your team down to ten men, you have to accept them as part of the game.”
