Albion Ladies 2 Sheffield FC 1

Baggies overcome league leaders

SPORTING Club Albion Ladies secured an important three points with an outstanding 2-1 home victory over current FA Women’s Premier League (Northern Division) champions Sheffield FC.

The Baggies had suffered three defeats on the bounce prior to Sunday’s clash with the league leaders, but showed fantastic resilience and managed to gain an impressive win.

Albion forward Robyn James marked her return from injury in the 25th minute, slotting home the opening goal of the game.

The visitors pulled one back less than 15 minutes later to level going into half time.

The Baggies secured all three points when Abby Pope scored the winning goal with 60 minutes played.

Manager Dave Lawrence was thrilled to see his side return to winning ways.

“I’m very pleased; the last three games were disappointing, we dropped points to teams we should have been beating,” said Lawrence.

“To come back against last year’s champions is very pleasing.

“We forced them into uncharacteristic mistakes and our game plan worked.”

Lawrence also praised forward James on her goal scoring return from injury.

“She’s a big plus for us.

“She can score goals but also her work rate without the ball is brilliant.”
