McAuley: We can count on Reidy

Defender backs right-back to do business should Jones miss out

GARETH McAuley has backed Steven Reid to fill the right-back slot - should Billy Jones' miss Saturday's trip to Chelsea due to injury.

The latter's ever-present league record this term came to an end after half-an-hour of the 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at the weekend.

With no specialist right-back on the bench, Morgan Amalfitano was called upon to fill the void at full-back - but McAuley believes Reid is the perfect cover for Jones against Jose Mourinho's title-challengers.

“He’s been in and around the squad," said McAuley.

“He had an injury, he’s got himself back fit and he’s training with us every day.

“Fingers crossed for Billy it’s not too bad - but Reidy’s ready to step into that berth.

“I thought Morgan did well there on Saturday considering he was playing out of position.

“Reidy’s a great pro.

“He’s great to have around and when he plays he’s fantastic for us.

“In football we all talk about the squad – and it’s important our squad sticks together.

“That’s how it is. It’s really gelled and whoever plays we want them to do well.”
