Brunt targets Swans return

Baggies skipper disappointed to miss Chelsea trip through injury

CHRIS Brunt is hoping he will be fit in time for Saturday’s home clash with Swansea (ko 3pm) after missing the 1-0 defeat at Chelsea due to an ankle injury.

The Baggies skipper picked up the problem in the 2-1 win over Sunderland ten days ago and was not risked for the Stamford Bridge encounter at the weekend.

But he has now targeted a return to action against the Capital One Cup-winning Swans at The Hawthorns.

“I did it in the game against Sunderland,” said Brunt.

“It was pretty badly swollen after the game and when I came back in on Monday morning it wasn’t great.

“There was never really going to be a chance of playing at the weekend.

“And, because of the points we’re on and the amount of games to go, it wasn’t really worth the risk.

“We made a decision towards the end of the week that it wasn’t going to happen.

“Hopefully I’ll be alright this weekend.”

The Northern Ireland international is eager to help his ninth-placed team-mates get back on track, with the West London reverse coming after successive wins over Liverpool and Sunderland.

“I was disappointed to miss the game after the couple of decent results we’ve had,” added Brunt.

“Chelsea is also a good place to play and I thought we could get something out of the game - but it wasn’t to be.

“It was more important to get myself fit for the rest of the season as we still have a lot of points to play for.

“The result wasn’t to be down there either.

“To go there and lose 1-0 against a good side doesn’t look bad.

“But, because of how far we’ve come over the last two seasons, we like to think we can go to places like that and get results now, as we showed at Anfield.

“But I think Chelsea just had a bit too much on the day from what I’ve seen.”
