Clarke says no truth in reports of Reading bid for striker
STEVE Clarke insists Shane Long is ‘not for sale’ after revealing there is no truth in media reports claiming the striker’s former club Reading have made a bid for his services.
Long has become a firm fans’ favourite since joining Albion last summer and found the net eight times during 2011/12 despite being plagued by injuries during the final six months of the term.
He opened his pre-season account from the penalty spot at Copenhagen on Wednesday and came closest to breaking the deadlock in today’s goalless draw at Barnsley, heading against the post in the 66th minute.
“We’ve had absolutely nothing on Shane,” said Clarke.
“There have been no bids and he’s not for sale. He’s 100 per cent part of my plans.”
Clarke revealed the club’s talks with key defender Jonas Olsson over a new contract are ongoing and is delighted with the Sweden international’s professionalism.
“I haven’t got anything new to report on that but I think you can see with Jonas’ performances on the pitch he’s still very much part of this club,” added the head coach.
“That’s the best place for Jonas to do his talking right now.”
