Daws makes Olympics bow

But Wood is heading home after New Zealand exit

CRAIG Dawson’s Olympic medal hopes are still alive!

The young centre-half made his bow at London 2012 last night, coming as a substitute for goalscorer Daniel Sturridge in stoppage time as Team GB beat Uruguay 1-0 in Cardiff to qualify for the quarter-finals as Group A winners.

Dawson & Co now face South Korea, again at the Millennium Stadium, in the last eight on Saturday (ko 7.30pm), with the winners meeting either much-fancied Brazil or Honduras in the semi-finals.

However, Chris Wood’s tournament came to an end on the same day.

The striker played the full 90 minutes of New Zealand’s 3-0 Group C defeat by Brazil.
