The Hawthorns under the lights

The Baggies are back in Sky Bet Championship action on Tuesday night, hosting Wigan Athletic at The Hawthorns (ko 8pm).

Albion have won eight of their last nine games in front of their own supporters, keeping an incredible eight clean sheets in the process.

Carlos Corberán's men suffered a 2-0 defeat at Hull City on Friday night, leaving them seven points adrift of the top six heading into the midweek clash.

Opponents Wigan are in desperate need of victories and sit inside the bottom three. They drew 1-1 with Birmingham City on Saturday, a result which means they'll arrive in B71 six points off safety.

Wigan Athletic are in the thick of a battle to save their Sky Bet Championship status.

The Latics arrive at The Hawthorns inside the bottom three and six points behind 21st-place Cardiff City with a dozen matches remaining.

Tuesday visitors have won just one game in all competitions since returning to action in early December following the break for the FIFA World Cup in Qatar (1/15) and are in real danger of slipping back into the third tier of English football.

Shaun Maloney, who spent four years at Wigan between 2011 and 2015, is the third permanent manager the club has had this season, following on from Leam Richardson and Kolo Toure.

The former Celtic and Scotland attacker was appointed in January having also managed Hibernian north of the border. Maloney was part of the Belgium national team coaching set up between 2018-2021 prior to his positions at Hibs and Wigan.

He's drawn four of his six matches in charge so far, winning one and losing one, and the Latics have certainly shown signs of improvement under the Scot, earning eye-catching draws against play-off contenders Blackburn and Norwich.

But it's victories Tuesday's guests need if they're to beat the drop and they'll be determined to kick-start a revival at The Hawthorns.

Wigan are in need of precious Sky Bet Championship points

From the Albion Archive

Albion beat Wigan 2-0 in the Sky Bet Championship on Boxing Day in 2018 thanks to a Jay Rodriguez brace.

The forward headed in the first in the opening half before firing in a second after the interval.

One for the stattos

Albion will be hoping to avoid a fourth straight winless meeting with Wigan Athletic this Tuesday.

The Baggies haven't tasted victory in any of the last three head-to-head encounters with the Latics, losing one and drawing two.

The two sides drew 1-1 back in August with strikers Josh Magennis and Karlan Grant both on target inside the opening 22 minutes.

The last Albion victory against Wigan came in January 2019 when Bakary Sako's strike settled an Emirates FA Cup third-round tie.

Two of the last three meetings have ended 1-1

Her Game Too

Carlos Corberán and Jenny Sugarman have joined forces to dedicate upcoming fixtures - including a historic Black Country derby at The Hawthorns - to International Women’s Day (IWD) and Her Game Too.

Sugarman’s women will host Wolves at The Hawthorns for the first time in the club’s history on Thursday, March 16 (ko 7.45pm), while Carlos Corberán’s men will dedicate their home Sky Bet Championship game against Wigan to IWD and Her Game Too.

Wigan visit B71 the night before IWD, an annual event celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, which takes place on March 8 each year.

Her Game Too are an organisation consisting of female supporters who are passionate about football and working to eradicate sexism in the industry, in the hope that women and girls of all ages feel confident and safe sharing their opinions both online and in real life without fear of sexist abuse. Albion announced a partnership with them in March 2022.

An image of Daryl Dike celebrating his goal against Wigan

Albion continued their remarkable home form with a 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic on Tuesday evening.

Daryl Dike’s first-half goal was enough to earn an important three Sky Bet Championship points – ensuring the Baggies are now 10 unbeaten in all competitions at The Hawthorns.

The result moves Carlos Corberán’s side up to ninth in the league table ahead of this weekend’s Huddersfield fixture.

The boss named an unchanged team for the visit of Wigan, bringing Mo Faal on to the bench after the striker was recalled from his goal-laden loan at AFC Fylde.

Following a quiet start, it was Albion who opened the scoring on 27 minutes. Jayson Molumby - set-up by Dike - saw his initial shot pushed against the crossbar, but thankfully the American striker was on hand to nod the rebound home.

And for the rest of the first period the home side were in the ascendancy, notable chances including Dike having a powerful volley well-saved and Dara O’Shea heading narrowly over.

As the break approached Wigan’s Will Keane fired wide with their only real shot up until that point, and Albion went into half-time deservedly leading 1-0.

Albion carried on their dominance at the start of the second 45, though Conor Townsend couldn’t beat Amos from range.

The Latics then tried to get back in it as the half progressed, substitute Josh Magennis heading over and Josh Griffiths denying Omar Rekik’s low strike.

But they were kept at bay in B71, thanks in part to another top Griffiths stop. John Swift even smashed one onto the crossbar late on as the crucial victory was, eventually, secured.

Albion: Griffiths; Furlong, O’Shea, Pieters (Ajayi 71), Townsend; Yokuslu, Molumby (Chalobah 57); Wallace, Swift (Gardner-Hickman 85), Albrighton (Reach 71); Dike.

Subs: Button, Malcolm, Faal.

Attendance: 21,552.
