West Bromwich Albion travel to Wigan Athletic on Tuesday night hoping to secure their first away win the Sky Bet Championship this season (ko 7.45pm).

The Baggies came from two goals down to draw 2-2 at Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon, the club's fourth draw in their opening six league matches.

Hosts Wigan suffered a heavy home beating at the hands of Burnley at the weekend, losing by five goals to one at the DW Stadium.

The Latics, who were promoted to the Championship from Sky Bet League One last term, have collected six points from their five games back in the second tier so far.

Albion's trip to the DW Stadium will be their third match on the bounce away from B71

Wigan boss Leam Richardson will want his side to forget all about Saturday's disappointing defeat to Burnley by recording a positive result against the Albion on Tuesday.

The 5-1 setback was the Latics' first league loss of the new campaign, with Richardson's men picking up draws against Preston, Norwich and Bristol City, as well as an away victory at Birmingham City, prior to last weekend's poor result on home soil.

Richardson, a former player for Bolton, Notts County, Blackpool and Accrington Stanley, had a spell as the club's caretaker boss before being handed the position permanently after John Sheridan's departure in November 2020.

The 42-year-old helped guide Wigan back to the second tier as Sky Bet League One champions last term, winning 92 points and scoring 82 goals.

Tuesday's hosts will be satisfied with their start to the season, but as previously stated, the Latics will be determined to avoid a second home defeat in four days when Steve Bruce's men come to town.

The Latics are back in the second tier following promotion last term

From the Albion Archive

The Baggies won 2-1 at Wigan in the Premier League in November 2012.

James Morrison headed the Albion in front before Gary Caldwell turned the ball into his own net to make it 2-0 to the visitors.

Arouna Kone pulled one back for the Latics but the Baggies held on to claim three points on the road.

One for the stattos

Albion have conceded exactly one goal in each of their last five visits to the DW Stadium.

The Baggies have won just one of those five matches - a 2-1 triumph in November 2012.

Albion and Wigan drew 1-1 the last time the two clubs met at the DW Stadium in December 2019

Colours for the road

Albion will wear their green and yellow away strip for the trip to Wigan on Tuesday night.

It will be the third time Steve Bruce's side have worn their second kit, following appearances in it at Middlesbrough on the opening day and then Blackburn Rovers earlier in August.

Karlan Grant scores against Wigan

Albion drew 1-1 at Wigan Athletic in the Sky Bet Championship on Tuesday evening.

The Latics netted an early opener through Josh Magennis, but the away side earned a point thanks to Karlan Grant’s equaliser.

Steve Bruce’s men return to action on Friday by hosting Burnley at The Hawthorns.

The boss made one change to his XI, bringing in Kyle Bartley for Darnell Furlong – and moving captain Dara O’Shea out to right-back.

But his men got off to a poor start when, with just six minutes on the clock, Wigan’s Magennis outmuscled the Albion defence and volleyed home the opening goal of the game.

The night went from bad to worse when Semi Ajayi sustained an innocuous injury on the 20-minute mark, Bruce forced into bringing on Furlong after the Nigerian defender pulled up while dribbling.

Albion needed a spark to bring them to life and, thankfully, it came midway through the half. Wigan were careless in possession and Grant was on hand to intercept a loose pass, run at the Latics back-line and send a perfect finish into the bottom corner.

Jason Kerr headed narrowly off-target for the hosts as they continued to pose a danger from set-pieces before the Baggies had the ball in the back of the net again, however Diangana’s finish just ahead of half-time was disallowed for offside.

The away side began the second period strongly and created a good opportunity to go ahead, but Conor Townsend’s mid-range effort ended up well wide.

Albion were dominating and might have done better with two more chances – Grant’s header failing to test Ben Amos and John Swift smashing a free-kick against the wall.

Bruce switched things up in an effort to find a winner, bringing Matty Phillips on for Jayson Molumby.

Yet they couldn’t find it and had to settle for a share of the spoils in the north west.

Albion: Button; O’Shea, Ajayi (Furlong 20), Bartley, Townsend; Yokuslu (Livermore 60), Molumby (Phillips 78); Wallace, Swift, Diangana; Grant.
