Shane, more fondly known as 'Jo-Jo' (after his grandfather, Jonathan) among his family and Albion colleagues, has a solid future ahead at The Hawthorns.

Born in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, Gompe lived in the Emerald Isle for five years before switching one capital for another when his family relocated to London.

In England's main city, Jo-Jo began obtaining his love for football at local side Genesis FC - where he developed between U6-U7s. His capability was clear to see, though, and time at a showcase team in the capital allowed the central midfielder to elevate his potential in the game.

After all, it was there where Crystal Palace watched Jo-Jo's ability and gave him a shot in their youth system - signing for the Eagles at the age of seven, where he remained between U8-U14s.

An injury to his left leg, however, resulted in Gompe being released after losing mobility on his left side. After working back to a full bill of health, the midfielder benefitted from showcase side, XYZ Football Academy in Croydon, where he found new opportunities at professional clubs.

Reading was the first, Bristol Rovers also provided a chance to shine, but the Baggies was where Gompe saw his future - signing as an U16 in December 2024.

A fearless, energetic presence in the middle of the park, Jo-Jo coped with the demands of football in the U18 Premier League while still an under-16 player - meaning the offer of a two-year scholarship in July 2025 came as just rewards for his ambition and potential.

Similar trends emerged during the midfielder's maiden term as a scholar where, after playing most of his football in the U18s, Gompe also featured in the PL2 team - making his debut as a substitute against Brentford in December 2025 before starting his maiden U21s game against Exeter later that month.

Jo-Jo will hope those experiences bode well for his future at The Hawthorns, where he hopes to play professionally in the coming years.
