Summerhill Primary Academy has celebrated a fantastic fundraising achievement after taking part in The Albion Foundation’s Baggie Bird Penalty Shootout earlier this year, raising an impressive £10,000, with the school receiving almost £4,000 to invest in its pupils and facilities.
Among the standout efforts, one pupil showed exceptional dedication by raising over £1,100 individually, highlighting the enthusiasm shown across the school community.
The Baggie Bird Penalty Shootout offers a fun, inclusive and completely free fundraising opportunity for schools, with 24 schools taking part during this academic year. It begins with a visit from one of The Albion Foundation’s coaches, who delivers an engaging assembly to introduce the competition and build excitement. A few weeks later, they return to host the main event, where each pupil is given three attempts to score past Baggie Bird in a lively penalty shootout challenge.
Pupils are rewarded with a wide range of prizes based on the sponsorship they raise, including water bottles, medals and footballs, as well as tickets to the West Midlands Safari Park and West Bromwich Albion matches at The Hawthorns. The highest fundraiser in the school earns a signed Albion shirt.
Matt Thwaites, assistant head at Summerhill Primary Academy, said:
“Being such a large school means sometimes it's hard to get everyone onboard and involved, but all the children (and staff!) loved every second!”
“The children got very competitive over who could raise the most and were really motivated by the prizes on offer.”
The funds were raised to enhance the school’s lunchtime provision, helping create a more active and enjoyable environment for pupils. Some of the money has already been used to purchase new equipment, including footballs, hoopsand skipping ropes, which have proved popular during breaktimes. The remaining funds will be used ahead of September, with plans to invest in new football goals and additional resources.
Staff also praised The Albion Foundation team for their support throughout, from the initial assembly to the delivery of prizes, helping ensure the event ran smoothly and remained enjoyable for everyone involved.
This success highlights the impact of the Baggie Bird Penalty Shootout, not just as a fundraiser but as an initiative that brings school communities together and leaves a lasting benefit for pupils.
