FAWNL Northern Premier Preview | Albion Women hoping to start 2026 with victory

A Match Pack graphic for Albion vs Hull.

Albion Women will hope to begin 2026 positively as they welcome Hull City to the Alexander Stadium on Sunday (2pm).

The Baggies were defeated by Wolves in their final pre-Christmas fixture but can take confidence from going two matches unbeaten prior to that clash.

Siobhan Hodgetts-Still side ended the year in fifth place of the FAWNL Northern Premier, and they’ll have their sights set on consolidating a top-five finish in the New Year.

The opposition

Visitors Hull City are enjoying a steady season to date.

The Tigresses’ effective approach has seen them up to seventh in the FAWNL Northern Premier table – claiming 14 points from 11 games played.

Chris Hames’ team won their first two league matches of the season, including once against Albion at the Versa Sportswear Stadium, a burst of form that saw them race to the upper echelons of the division.

Most recently, Hull beat Mancunian Unity 2-1 in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup, to, like Albion, secure their passage into the fourth-round of the competition.

Previous meetings

Hull City 4-1 Albion Women – August 2025

It was a tough second away trip of the season for the Baggies when the two teams last met. Strikes from Hope Knight (2), Ellie Tanser and Erin Nicholson meant that Phoebe Warner’s second-half goal wasn’t enough to claim any points in North Ferriby.

Albion’s last home game against the Tigresses saw another defeat. Izzy Gigg and Sophie Tinson’s efforts were the difference at the Valley Stadium.

Hull City 2-1 Albion Women – August 2024

Two Hull goals were again the downfall of Albion on their travels at the beginning of the 2024/25 campaign. Hope Knight opened the scoring inside three minutes, before Helen Lynskey’s cross deflected cruelly past Anna Miller, and Hannah George’s consolation couldn’t quite mount a late comeback.

Pre-match thoughts

Defender Lucy Day has her attentions fixed on another FAWNL Northern Premier start on Sunday.

The centre-half, who joined on a dual-registration basis from fellow Midlands club Birmingham City in November, has become an important cog in Hodgetts-Still’s Albion side.

Due to turn 18 on Friday, Day says that her senior development has been a “challenge” and says that the Baggies’ current fifth-place league position has helped her and the rest of the team to be “excited” for the year ahead.

She said: “I’ve loved it since joining, it’s been such a good challenge. I’ve really enjoyed being around the team, playing in the games, and being part of the team.

“We adapted well to the system change in the Leeds game, and I played on the right-side of the back three. It means I can get forwards a lot more which I like.

“I think I’ve got a lot to learn in terms of playing women’s football. We’ve got plenty to learn as a team too.

“It’s been a challenge since joining. It’s a stretch that I needed, the physical side of it is the biggest change. In academy football, I’m used to being one of the bigger players, and in that aspect of the game – I’ve not been challenged – but now I’ve found myself with that being a big challenge.

“I’ve enjoyed being stretched in that aspect and playing different styles of football. It’s been great and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

“We’ve all been excited to come back in. We enjoyed being off for a few days, but it’s been nice to come back and get ready for Hull and the rest of the season.

“The defeat to Wolves gives us something to bounce back from, definitely. Wolves was always going to be a tough game given where they are in the table, but our performance was strong and we need to carry that into the rest of the season.

“We know what we can do as a team, we know what we’re capable of, and I think we can get more points and climb the league. We can get something better out of this season.”
