‘It’s great to have confidence’ – Slaven

Slaven Bilić believes the confidence in camp has reached a record high following five successive victories.

The Baggies hadn’t won five games in a row for nearly ten years before wins against Hull, Stoke, Sheffield Wednesday, Bristol City and Preston – a run which has seen Slaven’s side maintain top spot in the Sky Bet Championship.

Albion have now lost just one of their 19 league games this season and the boss admitted a high level of confidence has played a part in his team being so impressive during the 2019/20 campaign.

But Bilić has warned his players against any complacency and has challenged them to keep picking up maximum points.

Slaven said: “I think this is the most confident we have been this season so far.

“We started very confidently in our first game and then we were building it up.

“With recent results and when you are near the top of the table or at the top of the table, the confidence grows.

“It’s great to have confidence.

“People are talking now about the big clubs with massive players not having confidence. The first thing they are talking about it a lack of confidence and self-belief.

“That’s how important it is.

“There’s always a danger of becoming overconfident. There’s a danger of thinking that you don’t have to put in as much effort and that victories are going to come by default. That is wrong. It’s our job to make sure that does not happen.

“We are on a good run and we can’t wait for the next games.

“At the same time, there are many things that we can improve and we must improve, not only to maintain this form but to also lift it up.”

Albion face Swansea City on Sunday at The Hawthorns with the visitors yet to lose any of their nine away games in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season.

And the boss is expecting a difficult game against a side who like to “play football”.

“It’s a big test. They’re a big club with some really good players.

“They have some good young players and some players who are proven in the Premier League.

“They are unbeaten away and they are a team that can play good football and that can hurt you.

“It should be a good game of football between two teams who like to play football. We’re looking forward to it.”
