Midfielder to miss Euros but hopefully fit for next season
CHRIS Brunt underwent surgery in France today on a knee injury which is expected to keep him out of action for six months.
The Northern Ireland defender will miss the rest of his Club’s Barclays Premier League season – and his country’s European Championship campaign at the finals in France this summer.
Brunt suffered a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee against Crystal Palace in the February 27 clash and underwent reconstructive surgery early today.
Head Coach Tony Pulis said: “It’s a big blow for Chris and everyone is feeling for him right now.
“It will be disappointing for us not to have him for the rest of the season because he is a terrific player who gives the team great balance.
“But obviously it is made even more cruel because it has denied him a career highlight with Northern Ireland this summer.”
Brunt was due to be guest of honour at a Hawthorns dinner tonight to salute his arrival this season in the exclusive club of players who have made 300 or more appearances for Albion.
Before flying to Lyon for the operation, he recorded a special message which will be played at the dinner.
He was accompanied by Albion’s Director of Performance Dr Mark Gillett, who heads up the club’s medical team and is optimistic Brunt’s absence will be restricted to this season’s football.
“We are hopeful that Chris will be nearing the completion of his rehabilitation towards the start of next season,” he said.
Everyone at West Bromwich Albion wishes Chris a speedy and full recovery!
