Ridgewell: Let's build momentum

Defender ready to do battle with former boss Bruce

LIAM Ridgewell is aiming to draw on the backing of another superb away following at Hull today (ko 3pm) and help Albion build on last weekend’s victory at Swansea.

More than 2,200 Baggies fans are making the trip to the KC Stadium on the back of last Saturday’s 2-1 success in South Wales, which saw a sell-out 2,000-strong away contingent roar the team to three massive points.

And left-back Ridgewell is desperate to taste further joy on Humberside as Albion chase back-to-back league wins for the first time since the end of September.

“It was a big win at Swansea, I think everybody showed after the game how big a win it was for the players, the fans and the club,” he said.

“It’s up to us to build on that now and try to pick up more points.

“We know the situation we’re in and we need to get points. The support was fantastic last week against Swansea and walking out with such a great away backing was great.

“Hopefully we can do that against Hull and go there and show what we’re about.”

Ridgewell admits the win at the Liberty Stadium – only the club’s second in 20 attempts - has naturally had a positive effect on an already confident group of players.

And he has revealed it is not just the players who have benefited from the feel-good factor.

“We’re all pretty confident and upbeat anyway so that didn’t really change,” the 29-year-old said.

“But when you do get that win then obviously it lifts everybody a little bit more and hopefully we can try and take that little bit extra into the Hull game.

“It’s not just the playing staff - West Brom are very together. Everyone at the training ground is together so you can go out and see the groundsmen and the canteen team, they’re a lot more upbeat so it’s a more positive place to be.

“That’s what happens when you start winning games.”

Ridgewell is all too aware of what to expect against Steve Bruce’s Tigers having played under him during their time together at Blues.

It promises to be a hard-fought encounter between two teams separated by just three places and two points in the Barclays Premier League table.

But the defender is under no illusions as to what he and his team-mates need to do as they embark on the final nine games of the season.

“We need 40 points, it’s plain and simple,” he said.

“We just need to keep doing what we did at Swansea, maintain that, try and build on it and keep clocking up those points.

“We’ve got to start churning it out and making sure we get the points.

“Everyone’s going to be the same - Hull, Cardiff, Norwich…we’ve just got to make sure we’re on the right side of getting the three points.”
