Jones: It's good to be back

And full-back expects squad to stand up to festive challenges

BILLY Jones is pleased to have returned to full fitness ahead of a busy Barclays Premier League Christmas schedule.

The 26-year-old started at Newcastle on Saturday after recovering from the hamstring injury he suffered against Crystal Palace last month – while fellow right-back Steven Reid was rested for the St James’ Park clash.

And Jones believes the Baggies will benefit from a strong squad as they prepare to host Manchester City on Wednesday (ko 8pm) and Norwich on Saturday (ko 3pm) – the first two of six fixtures in December.

“I was happy to get through the game and get 90 minutes under my belt,” said Jones.

“My hamstring was feeling good and strong which I knew it would be because we’ve done everything right from a medical point of view.

“I had a good five days training before the game.

“Going into Christmas and the New Year we know it’s a very important part of the season for every club in the Premier League.

“We know we’re in a good position squad-wise.

“The gaffer can make changes and the team won’t be weakened.”

Jones admits his team-mates were disappointed with their performance in the 2-1 loss at Newcastle – but was quick to put the defeat into context.

“It was disappointing because you can’t expect to play how we did in the first half and win a game in the Premier League," he added.

“But I think that’s only our second loss in ten games.

“It’s only the second time we’ve lost away from home so there are still positives there from the overall picture of the season.

“We know we need to turn those draws into wins.

“Hopefully that starts with two massive home games beginning on Wednesday night.”
