West Bromwich Albion will be determined to post a positive response to Saturday's first defeat of the season when Middlesbrough come to The Hawthorns on Tuesday night (ko 8pm).

The Baggies lost 3-2 at Sheffield Wednesday over the weekend - a result which ended their six-game unbeaten beginning to the Sky Bet Championship campaign.

Visitors Boro picked up three points in their most recent match, overcoming Stoke City 2-0 at the Riverside Stadium thanks to efforts from Ben Doak and Hayden Hackney.

Albion head into the encounter still top of the standings despite the setback in Sheffield, with Boro five points behind in eighth.

The visitors

Middlesbrough will have their sights set on mounting an assault on the top six this season having record four consecutive top-ten finishes in the second tier.

Boro head to The Hawthorns sat eighth in the table after picking up 11 points from their opening seven matches, winning three, drawing two and losing two.

They'll arrive full of confidence too, confidence provided by Saturday's comfortable 2-0 triumph at home to Stoke City.

On their travels, Tuesday's guests have won one and lost two, defeating bottom side Cardiff City 2-0 while also suffering narrow 1-0 setbacks at both Derby County and Sunderland.

Michael Carrick is the man in charge at the Riverside Stadium. He was handed the position a day before Carlos Corberán was appointed Baggies boss in October 2022.

The clash at The Hawthorns in midweek will be the former England midfielder's 97th at the helm. The 43-year-old has a record of 48 victories, 16 draws and 32 defeats.

The stats

The home side has won four of the last five head-to-heads. Last season, Albion won 4-2 at The Hawthorns in August, but then went on to lose 1-0 at Boro two days before Christmas.

Ben Doak scored his first senior goal against Stoke City on Saturday, aged 18 years and 322 days old. He's the youngest Boro player to score an EFL goal since Josh Coburn's strike at home to Peterborough United in October 2021.

In the last eight meetings, both teams have won three matches each with the other two ending level.

The Baggies have kept five clean sheets in-a-row at The Hawthorns (Preston, Southampton, Leeds, Swansea City & Plymouth Argyle).

Mark, a 57-year-old Birmingham Road End season-ticket holder, passed away on Saturday following a medical emergency during the club’s game at Sheffield Wednesday.

The thoughts of all at the club remain with Mark’s family at this desperately sad time.

Albion suffered their first home defeat since April on Tuesday night, losing 1-0 to Middlesbrough at The Hawthorns.

Hayden Hackney’s second-half goal earned Boro all three Sky Bet Championship points in B71.

Carlos Corberán’s team will try and bounce back this weekend when they host Millwall.

The boss made two changes to his XI, bringing in Alex Mowatt and Jed Wallace for Ousmane Diakite and Tom Fellows.

An early stoppage saw assistant referee Rob Smith receive medical treatment before being replaced by fourth official Jacob Miles - and leaving with the best wishes of all four stands.

Middlesbrough threatened for the first time around the 25-minute mark, Alex Palmer saving Finn Azaz’s effort and Riley McGree skewing his rebound over. Albion’s No.1 then needed to be at his best again soon after, superbly keeping out Emmanuel Latte Lath’s nod towards goal.

The home side improved following those scares and began to create chances themselves, as John Swift curled over and Jed Wallace saw a side-footed finish well stopped inside the area.

There was one final opportunity during first-half stoppage time via an Albion counter-attack, but Wallace’s shot at the end of a quick move landed wide.

An image of The Hawthorns applauding during the tribute to supporter Mark Townsend

The game halted during the 57th minute to pay tribute to Baggies fan Mark Townsend, who sadly passed away on Saturday, with the whole stadium participating in a period of applause.

Openings were pretty scarce until just after the hour mark - Boro twice going close through Luke Ayling and Latte Lath headers, and Palmer also smartly keeping out a Ben Doak attempt.

There was nothing the Baggies ‘keeper could do about Middlesbrough’s goal, though, Hackney guiding one into the bottom corner and handing them the advantage.

Corberán’s men attempted a response and almost found it eight minutes from time, however Josh Maja couldn’t quite guide his poke home despite Dieng already being beaten.

And Maja hammered into the side netting in a late onslaught where, unfortunately, Albion were unable to draw level.
