McAuley seals historic Northern Ireland win

McAuley & Evans take their places in Northern Ireland history

GARETH McAuley wrote his way into Northern Ireland folklore as he scored the country’s first-ever goal at a European Championships.

The 36-year-old defender headed home a 49th-minute winner as the Green and White Army recorded a 2-0 victory over Ukraine in Lyon.

Alongside his Albion partner Jonny Evans, the pair held off a Ukraine rear-guard to earn a clean sheet for Michael O’Neill’s men.

Northern Ireland must now prepare for a showdown with World Champions Germany – not that they’ll daunt our Jonny and G-Mac.
