Baggies triumph thanks to Cambiasso own goal

ALBION claimed a hard-fought 1-0 Barclays Premier League victory at Leicester courtesy of Esteban Cambiasso’s own goal.

The former Argentina international put through his own net in the 47th minute, the ball ricocheting off his body from Foxes captain Wes Morgan’s header as he attempted to clear a cross from Saido Berahino.

It proved a battling encounter at the King Power Stadium, with half-chances the order of the day and clear-cut openings few and far between.

But that not make the three points any less sweet for the visitors, who have now won their last four meetings with Leicester after this – their first-ever Premier League tussle.

Victory ensures the Baggies have now been defeated just once in their last six league matches and now climb into the top half of the table.

Albion head coach Alan Irvine named an unchanged starting XI from the side which drew 2-2 against Crystal Palace last weekend.

Berahino enjoyed the first real sight of goal after 17 minutes, forcing Kasper Schmeichel to get down low to his right, before Stephane Sessegnon fired a tame effort goalwards.

Foxes defender Morgan was narrowly off target with a header but, all in all, it was a low-key opening half an hour.

Jamie Vardy wasted a clear-cut overhead opportunity in the 37th minute as he beat the offside trap from a recycled corner.

Chris Brunt, who marshalled the away side with boundless energy, then blazed over a great chance for the visitors from Berahino’s cut back, with the game goalless at the interval.

Yet that all changed just two minutes into the second period.

Berahino's left-wing cross was headed clear by Morgan but straight into the body of Cambiasso, who deflected the ball into his own net.

Vardy broke clear and fired straight at Ben Foster in the 62nd minute as the hosts looked pressed for an equaliser.

Foster then produced a superb save to keep out Andy King’s 77th-minute header from point-blank range.

And, despite four minutes of injury time, the Baggies held out for three impressive points.
