Morrison likes Mel impact

Midfielder impressed by what new boss has got to say

JAMES Morrison admits he has been impressed by Pepe Mel’s instant impact at the club.

The 50-year-old Spaniard was named Albion’s new head coach last Thursday evening and watched Saturday's clash with Southampton before taking his first training session on Tuesday.

And Morrison reckons the squad have quickly bought into his footballing philosophies as they prepare for Monday’s home clash with Everton (ko 8pm).

“My first thoughts are he’s impressive,” said the Baggies midfielder.

“He’s a real nice guy.

“On the training pitch in one-on-one’s he’s trying to speak in English – it’s pretty good actually.

“He ticks the boxes.

“I think he’ll just try and get a buzz going around the players.

“He’s come across really well this week in training.

“The main focus at the moment is him getting his points across and the squad has really taken to him.

“He just wants us to play a pressing game.

“It’s a bit different from what we’ve been doing in recent years.

“I’m looking forward to a change in our game and giving the crowd something to cheer about and some exciting football.

“In training he’s putting two sets of 11 against each other and getting his points across and trying to get us to press high.

“It’s a new style of play and I think the team is really looking forward to playing a different style – a little like Everton and Swansea, who have that Spanish philosophy.

“And we have players in the squad who can do that.

“I think the chairman has done a good job in appointing the right man and hopefully Pepe can take us in the right direction.”
