BEN Foster admits he was imagining Sunday’s newspaper headlines when he so nearly fired a dramatic late equaliser in Albion’s 1-0 defeat at Chelsea on Saturday.
The 29-year-old stopper temporarily relinquished his goalkeeping duties as the Baggies went in search of a stoppage-time leveller at Stamford Bridge.
But Foster, who once again committed himself to international duty last week, was denied what would have been a sensational first career goal on his 200th league appearance.
“I tried my best to score at the end but it wasn’t to be,” said Foster.
“I'd love to see a picture of it.
“I could see the headlines already being written.
“It was so close but unfortunately David Luiz got a nick just as it came to me, and we just couldn't get that break.”
But Albion’s No.1 admitted Demba Ba’s 28th-minute strike was a 'sloppy' goal to concede from a short-corner - and the European champions deserved their victory.
“It wasn't a great goal to give away,” added Foster.
“We've worked on it as well.
“We've tried to stop the short-corners in training.
“It's so important especially when you have players like Oscar.
“I didn't know who was behind me but Luiz did well to get it back across goal.
“It was a sloppy one to concede - but Chelsea were the better team.
“You know it'll be a busy game and that you have to be at your best.”
On the England front Foster recognises Manchester City’s Joe Hart firmly remains No.1 and is eager to lend him his support going forward.
“I want to be in the national squad and help the team out in any way I can - I am more than happy to do that," he insisted.
“It's a case of needs must that I put international football on hold in the first place because I just wanted to spend more time with my family.
“We have to be so thankful and happy that we have someone like Joe in the team.
“He can be England's goalkeeper for the next ten to 15 years and that's no exaggeration.
“He is one of the top goalies in the world and if I can be there to help out whatsoever then I will.
“I'm just happy to be there.”
In the end, the highlight of the weekend for the former Manchester United man was the singing performance of 16-year-old Isaiah Brown, who completed his first-team initiation ceremony at the club’s hotel on Friday night.
“Izzy's singing was horrific,” he quipped.
“It was absolutely awful but fair play he's been training for a week or so with us and for a kid he's so calm - and brilliant.
“Fair play to the gaffer too for involving him and he should be very proud of that at 16.
“He seems a good, grounded kid.”
