Captain Long stars in Ireland romp

Foster also on the bench as England hold Brazil in Rio

SHANE Long capped a memorable week by captaining Republic of Ireland to a 4-0 friendly success against Georgia in Dublin.

Four days after heading his country in front in the 1-1 draw against England at Wembley, Long marked his 36th cap by wearing the armband for the first time.

The Baggies striker was involved in the incident that saw Giorgi Loria sent off in the 19th minute with the game goalless. The Georgia keeper received his marching orders for bringing down Long when he was clean through.

Long, who won the man-of-the-match vote, threatened the scoresheet on numerous occasions and had a hand in Ireland’s second goal before being subbed in the 72nd minute.

Richard Keogh opened the scoring with a 42nd-minute header before Long’s former Baggies team-mate Simon Cox and a Robbie Keane double completed the scoring after the break.

Meanwhile, Ben Foster was an unused sub as England held Brazil in a thrilling 2-2 draw in the Maracana Stadium.

Youssouf Mulumbu saw no action on Saturday as DR Congo's friendly clash with Guinea in Saint-Cyr-Sur-Mer, France, was cancelled.
